From DGC to GC: Climbing the Last Rung of the Legal Ladder

What do DGCs want? They want access to resume-building opportunities that will help them, eventually, ascend to the GC role. 

But many simply aren’t getting it.  

According to a recent survey of DGCs: 

•  71% believe their current position doesn’t offer the necessary exposure to the C-suite (including working with senior executives on finance matters and strategic initiatives)  
• Another 42% say their current position doesn’t provide the substantive management experience (such as leadership or cross-functional management of non-lawyers) required to advance to a GC position 

Overall, more than two-thirds of DGCs say limited professional development, advancement opportunities, or lack of a clear career path are major concerns with their current role.
