Trade Compliance Lawyer

Australia - Sydney

We are currently seeking a mid-to-senior level secondee to provide expert counsel on APAC trade matters, particularly around licensing and import/export policy requirements for hardware tech products. This full-time, contract role requires a robust understanding of trade compliance, licensing requirements, and supply chain management. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated success in coordinating with cross-functional stakeholders in a multinational environment and experience in, or a deep understanding of, the tech sector.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel and advice on licensing and policy requirements for the movement of physical hardware including R&D materials and production equipment/tooling for a internationally recognized technology brand. 
  • Offer guidance on product compliance to ensure smooth import and export processes across multiple APAC jurisdictions, liaising with customs as necessary.
  • Review, execute, and coordinate documentation required for trade compliance and supply chain activities, ensuring all necessary legal processes are adhered to.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional internal stakeholders, including Legal, Operations, Tax, Corporate Legal, and Business Requesters, to facilitate seamless supply chain operations.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel and external third parties, as needed, to address complex trade and compliance matters.

Qualifications: 

  • 6- 10+ years of experience in APAC trade compliance and controls, particularly in legal and compliance aspects related to supply chain management.
  • Strong understanding of licensing and policy requirements for hardware movement in dynamic, tech-driven environments.
  • Excellent ability to review, draft, and manage complex legal documents and trade compliance records.
  • Proven track record in liaising with customs and regulatory bodies on compliance issues, ensuring adherence to regional regulations.
  • Exceptional communication and coordination skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with both internal and external stakeholders across different regions.
