Large language models (LLMs) promise to revolutionize the practice of law. This course is the first in a linked series of three which aims to teach all members of the profession what they need to understand how LLMs can be used in their current work and how they will change the entire way that law is practiced.

Part 1 focuses on foundational issues in artificial intelligence and law. It provides a history and overview of AI, especially generative AI, and provides non-technical explanations of the technical features of LLMs. This provides the foundation for lawyers to understand the more remarkable (and dangerous) features of LLMs, from their plausibility to their unreliability. It will give all participants the basis for using LLMs more effectively and with more confidence.
